Whooooooooosh!
Winnifred the Witch was in a hurry, flying through the forest on her broom looking for her lost wand. She knew she’d dropped it somewhere around here…
"Ow!" said the witch.
She looked up to see what she had flown into. It was a dragon!
"Oh oh..." said Winnifred, backing away.
"Oy," said the dragon, "what do you mean by flying into me like that?"
"Sorry," explained Winnifred, “I was just looking for my lost wand. Its long and shiny with a star on the top.”
“Err,” said the dragon, looking a bit embarrassed. “You mean, my toothpick?”
She held up the wand, which was a bit less shiny than it had been before she had used it to pick her teeth with. But it still had the star on top.
“Yes!” said the witch, “Can I have it back, please?"
“Hmmm,” considered the dragon. “You can have it back, if…. you do something for me.”
“What?” asked the witch, getting worried. Might the dragon want help capturing a princess? Or fighting a knight in shining armour?
“I’ll show you,” said the dragon. “Just climb on my back. My name is Diana, by the way.”
“I’m Winnifred. You can call me Winnie,” said the witch, climbing up onto Diana’s back.
Diana took off, flying much faster than the witch could on her broomstick, till they came to a river.
On the other side of the river was a castle.

Diana landed. “See that castle over there?” she asked. “In it lives my friend Princess Peasblossom. I want to go visit her.”
“So,” said Winnie. “Why don’t you?”
The dragon moved her ginormous head next to the witch’s ear, and whispered “I’m scared of water, I can’t fly over the river, I might fall in, and I can’t swim!”
The witch was astonished, but tried not to show it.
“I see…” she said. “Well then, if you return my magic wand, then the first thing I shall do is use it to make a very large, strong, sturdy bridge for you to use to visit your friend, Princess Peasblossom.”
Diana was extremely happy with this idea, and gave Winnie back her wand.
She waved the wand and said:
"Shore to shore,
Heart to heart,
May these two friends never need to part."
And a very large stone bridge, big and strong enough even for a dragon, was suddenly there, over the river.

Diana, pausing only to say a quick thank you, ran over the bridge to see her friend. Winnie, shaking her head, took her wand and got back on her broomstick to fly home.
